Who is… Thanos

Thanos is one of those villains that everyone seems to have heard about, especially now that the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is setting up for him to be the main villain. Even though he is a popular villain not everyone seems to know much about him, like his origin, his power and even his goals and purpose this article will dive into the life of this villain so the fans can have a better understanding of this villain.

The first appearance of the villain in the comics was in Iron Man #55 (Feb. 1973) and he has had other major appearances in the comics, he has fought the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and countless heroes, he is also the main villain in the upcoming movies of the MCU Infinity War part 1 and 2.

Thanos was born on Saturn’s moon Titan and is part of a race called the Eternals, he carries the Deviant gene, that causes him to share the physical appearance Eternal’s cousin race. His mother tried to kill him when he was born due to this reason, during his school years he was a pacifist and he would only play with his brother and pets, when he reached adolescence he had become fascinated with nihilism and death, worshipping and eventually falling in love with the physical embodiment of death. As an adult Thanos improved his physical strength and powers by mystical and artificial means.

Wishing to impress Mistress Death, Thanos commits many atrocities, including murdering his family and bombing his entire planet, killing millions of his people. After that he starts his search for universal power in the form of the Cosmic Cube. he locates the cube in earth and uses it to become omnipotent, after he was done with the cube he discards it. Thanos is defeated after the Kree hero Captain Marvel with the aid of the Avengers manage to destroy the cosmic cube.

After this Thanos comes to the aid of Adam Warlock in a war against the Magus and his religious empire. During this alliance Thanos cultivates a plan to reunite with Mistress Death, and secretly siphons off the energies of Warlock’s Soul Gem, and combines these with the power of the other infinity gems to create a weapon capable of destroying a star.

Warlock summons the Avengers and Captain Marvel to stop Thanos, although the plan is foiled when Thanos kills Warlock. The Titan regroups and captures the heroes, who are freed by Spider-Man and the Thing. Thanos is finally stopped by Warlock, whose spirit emerges from the soul gem and turns the titan to stone.

Thanos is eventually resurrected, and collects the infinity gems once again. He uses the gems to create the Infinity Gauntlet, making himself omnipotent, and erases half the living things in the universe to prove his love to Death. This act and several other acts are soon undone by Adam Warlock. Warlock reveals that Thanos has always allowed himself to be defeated because the titan secretly knows he is not worthy of ultimate power.

Thanos abilities include but are not limited to:

  • Superhuman strength, durability, endurance, and intelligence
  • Energy manipulation
  • Telekinesis
  • Teleportation
  • Longevity

His powers increase exponentially when he wields the cosmic cube, and later the infinity gauntlet which both grant him almost omnipotent power.

We are excited to see how Thanos behaves in the MCU, because we have not seen the extent of his powers but we do know that he helped Loki when he invaded earth along the Chitauri army, Thanos gave Loki his staff containing an infinity stone, he also promised Ronan that he would destroy an entire planet if he could get him The Orb which contained another infinity stone, also during Guardians of the Galaxy we get an idea that Thanos is this big evil guy that has destroyed countless planets.
